A note from Maestro Crafton Beck -
Dear Friends:
The unvarnished truth of the matter is that in all my nine years here the MSO has never performed a concert more packed with notes, power or passion. Our opening concert this season should just about explode onto the stage, presenting as it does four masterworks, three of which are among the most famous in the repertoire. From their first notes Wagner's Flying Dutchman Overture and Strauss' Don Juan are both instantly recognizable. Their effect on listeners is so persuasive that their use in commercials and cartoons have almost become cliché. Meanwhile, Dvorak's concerto for cello is recognized worldwide as the concerto for that instrument. It is also a work which absolutely demands power, sound, and a virtuosic technique from the cello soloist, and Eric Kim brings us all these plus a powerful musical personality. I am personally looking forward to working with Eric: he and I have known one another since student days at the Aspen Music Festival and served together at the Cincinnati Symphony, where he served as Principal Cellist for many years. All in all, this is an opening concert not to be missed, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
