The incredible sound of a 350 year old violin has been heard in recent MSO concerts

MSO Concertmaster Marta Szlubowska has been using an incredible Amati violin for the last few months. The instrument has been on loan and goes back to the owner this week. These instruments are of high value and are actually considered a solid investment, as their value increases annually!

The Amati Marta has been using was built by Nicolo Amati in 1676. Nicolo's grandfather, Andrea Amati, was the first violin maker in the distinguished Italian family. The Amatis preceded the Stradivari family, but Nicolo's life overlapped with Antonio Stradivari for about 40 years, during which time Nicolo's craft was taught to Antonio. Amati violins are the earliest string instruments which still exist in some quantity today. The Amati family is responsible for the design of the violin we play today, including the addition of the fourth string, which is, of course, now standard.
