Summer String Camp a Rousing Success
MSO's 2009 Premier Orchestral Institute was truly an international affair. With students and faculty of many nationalities and from as far away as Peru, the week-long orchestral camp created an incredible synergy in engaging string students from elementary age through college. The camp, organized by MSO Director of Education Alex Encinas and POI Artistic Director Pablo Saelzer, was held June 1-6, 2009 at Millsaps College. With the highest participation to date, the students were divided into four ensembles with expert leadership. The camp's music directors and teachers also formed a professional Master Camerata, which performed an exciting public concert on Thursday evening of that week.
Special recitals and programs for the students included performances by Temperance Babcock (MSO musician and Bluegrass artist), Carmelo de los Santos (violin), Viktor Uzur (cello) and Marcos Machado (bass). Camp ensemble conductors were Pablo Saelzer, Jorge Ivan Gonzales and Stephanie Maisel. Staff included MSO Concertmaster Marta Szlubowska, Carmelo de los Santos, Temperance Babcock (MSO), Joel Pagan (University of Texas), Viktor Uzur, Nancy Bateman (MSO) and Marcos Machado (USM).
Funding and other assistance were provided by:
