Music and the Arts - Still Our Only Future
The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will perform in Natchez for the first time as part of the inaugural Music and the Arts: Still Our Only Future conference November 19-22, 2009. According to Still's daughter, Judith Anne Still: "The conference is an important step in fostering music and the arts in our nation's communities and in reestablishing music and the arts in our schools."
The conference is also a tribute to William Grant Still, a pioneer in the field of American classical music. Conductor Crafton Beck will direct the MSO in a performance of works by this ground-breaking composer. The concert will mark the first complete Mississippi performance of Still's Afro-American Symphony, which was the first work by an African American to be played by a major American orchestra (1931).
The tribute concert is open to the public. For more information or inquiries, contact William Grant Still Music at 928.526.9355 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Details for the conference are also posted at www.williamgrantstill.com.
Advance tickets for the MSO concert may be obtained through the Natchez Convention and Visitors Bureau: 800.647.6724. Tickets are $10.00 in advance and $12.00 at the door.
