Don’t miss the BIG BANG!
An all Tchaikovsky concert opening with excerpts from Swan Lake, the first half closes with the 1812 Overture, complete with the Mississippi Chorus, sounds of canons, bells and full orchestra. Tchaikovsky's incredible and popular Symphony No. 6 closes this exciting program.
From Music Director Crafton Beck:
Perhaps it is simply that it was his last symphony. Or maybe it is that his death came a mere nine days after the symphony's first performance, foreshadowed as it was by the extreme emotions of the symphony's final music. Perhaps it is that -- along with the mighty Fifth Symphony -- it is one of the world's most beloved pieces of all time. For whatever the reason, Tchaikowsky's Sixth Symphony is one of the all-time greats in the hearts of music lovers everywhere and one which musicians everywhere never cease to enjoy as well.
I hope you will join me and the Mississippi Symphony as we perform Tchaikowsky's Sixth Symphony side-by-side with two other works by him which are equally as famous and equally enjoyable for musicians and audiences alike: Swan Lake and the (literally) explosive 1812 Overture. Most of us musicians agree: it is both Tchaikowsky's sheer genius for melody and his easy ability at expressing powerful and large-scale emotions which make this music so attractive to all of us. The MSO and I are already enjoying our preparation for this great concert, and we hope you will join us.
