Composer’s Forum at the Mississippi Museum of Art

On Monday, April 23, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Crafton Beck will present a special Composers Forum at the Mississippi Museum of Art.  This year, music by students from Belhaven University and Mississippi Univeristy for Women will be read, discussed and given their world premieres.  The idea of offering a forum for student composers was conceived by Maestro Beck and was presented to an enthusiastic audience for the first time in the 2010-11 MSO season.

The format of the informal program will provide for an initial reading of each new musical selection, a conversation with the young composer with opportunity for input from the musicians, followed by second rendering and recording of the new piece.  In preparation for the evening, music composition students from Belhaven University, Jackson State University and Mississippi College were invited to prepare a new musical selection for full orchestra.  The pieces were developed under the guidance of faculty at the schools.

Studnets and faculty involved include:

Belhaven University:
Faculty: Andrew Sauerwein
Student:  Tripp Stewart

MUW:
Faculty: Valentin M. Bogdan
Students:
Biraj Adhikari
Kevinanthony Carroll, Jr.

The concert is free and begins at 5:30 at the Mississippi Museum of Art.
