Janette Sudderth: MSO Assistant Principal Cello

Janette SudderthJanette Sudderth was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Sylvan Elementary and Sylvan Hills High School there. She studied piano with her mother and cello with Martha Bishop. She played cello in the Atlanta Youth Symphony through her high school years. As a senior, she played the first movement of the Schumann Piano Concerto with the Atlanta Youth Symphony. She graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in Piano and Cello performance. She studied there with John Schneider, piano, and Martha Gerschefski, cello.

While at Georgia State, she played principal cello in the All-State Orchestra, playing the Symphony of Psalms conducted by Robert Shaw. Then, she went to school in Texas at Midwestern State University with, again, a major in piano and cello performance. She studied with Gary Lewis, piano, and Adolfo Odnoposoff, cello, while at Midwestern, and privately with John Perry, piano.

While attending Midwestern State, Sudderth was the principal cellist of the Wichita Falls Symphony. She came to Jackson in 1979 to teach strings in the Jackson Public Schools and to be in the Mississippi Symphony. She has worked at many colleges in the Jackson area: Jackson State University, Belhaven College, Millsaps College and Hinds Community College as teacher and/or accompanist. She has played organ at several churches in the Jackson area and studied organ with Billy Trotter, organist at Northminster Baptist Church and retired professor of organ at Mississippi College.

She is currently the organist/pianist at St. Richard Catholic Church. At this time she is a piano instructor at Hinds Community College and assistant principal cellist in the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.
